Why is ethanol fermentation used?

Question: Why is ethanol fermentation used?

Answer: Ethanol can be produced two ways, it can be synthesized from crude oil and synthetic chemicals or it can be fermented by yeast from sugars and starches. In order to reduce dependence on limited oil reserves we are interested in fermenting ethanol out of organic materials, called biomass, to drive our engines and machinery.
